What began as a simple vacation suggestion turned into a life-changing journey. I’m Paul Nero, a father of two boys, Owen and Wyatt. The story of our connection to Exuma is one rooted in love, loss, and the healing power of island paradise.
For years, my family—myself, my late wife Kim, and our boys vacationed in Turks & Caicos. One day, a close friend suggested we try something new: "You need to go to Exuma." Like many, my first response was, "Where is Exuma?"
Routed in love, loss & healing
Life, however, had other plans. That same year, Kim was diagnosed with cancer, and in what felt like a heartbeat, our lives were forever changed. In the wake of loss, the idea of travel was distant—until a year or two later, when we finally made that trip to Exuma, joined by the same friends who first suggested it.
That trip changed everything. I had met Beth Rayl—a fellow widow who has a child of her own named Jacob, and what started as friendship blossomed into something more. We rented a VRBO home, and as soon as we arrived, we were captivated. The water was unlike anything we have ever seen—vivid, endless shades of blue that seemed almost unreal. Exuma wasn’t just beautiful; it was healing.
As we left, I told myself: Someday, I will own a home here.
Where we are today
Nearly a decade has passed, and our love for Exuma has only grown. It’s become our sanctuary, a place we return to again and again with friends and family.
